MELAMINE / FURNITURE BOARD SOURCING

Melamine Faced MDF & Chipboard

Review melamine faced MDF and chipboard for cabinet carcasses, wardrobes, shelving and furniture components. Define core, decor, surface texture and edge requirements together for a useful sourcing specification.

MDF and chipboard

Select the core around the component

01

Melamine faced MDF

MDF is made from wood fibres and has a relatively uniform core. It can suit specified furniture components and machining details. Confirm the grade and suitability for the proposed processing and fixings.

02

Melamine faced chipboard

Chipboard, also called particleboard, is made from wood particles. It is commonly specified for furniture carcasses and shelving. Confirm board grade, edge treatment, fixing system and load requirements for the finished component.

03

Choosing between cores

Compare machining needs, screw fixing, component loads, finish and cost against the brief. Moisture-resistant grades and emission requirements need exact product confirmation; a melamine surface does not make every board waterproof.

Uses and decorative finishes

Match the panel to the furniture schedule

01

Common uses

Discuss cabinet carcasses, wardrobe interiors, shelves, desks, storage units and other furniture components. State span, loads, installation environment and edge details where they affect material selection.

02

Decors, woodgrain and texture

Provide a decor code, sample or finish reference for solid colours and woodgrain finishes. Define texture, sheen and grain direction. For adjacent components, agree decor matching and batch consistency criteria.

03

Front and back faces

Specify whether both faces have the same decor and texture or a different reverse-side finish. Align board construction and edge decor with the component schedule.

Specifications and board checks

Agree what the order must match

01

Common specification fields

Provide panel length × width, thickness, MDF or chipboard core and grade, front/back decor, texture, grain direction, edging and quantity. Include destination standards and required documentation in the RFQ.

02

Availability

Available specifications vary by product and project requirements. Confirm sheet sizes, thicknesses, decors and grades against the exact product and order.

03

Board quality inspection

Agree checks for thickness, dimensions, flatness, core condition, surface defects, decor consistency and edge damage. Request product-specific evidence for emission limits or other required performance. Use an approved sample and written criteria as the inspection reference.

Samples and procurement

Plan projects and bulk supply against a material schedule

01

Samples

Request a decor and core sample with the application, preferred texture and delivery address. Confirm availability, charges and shipment details. Photographs support selection; approve a physical reference for colour and texture.

02

Project and bulk purchasing

Send a BOM or material schedule with quantities by core, thickness and decor. Include project phases, repeat order expectations, destination and requested timing. Request written confirmation of commercial terms and availability.

03

Export packaging

Agree surface separators, corner and edge protection, stack identification, moisture protection and pallet or crate requirements. Match labels and packing lists to each decor, thickness and project batch.
